The Darkness' first album is perfect. There, I said it. I'm not crazy about the rest of their catalog, but when you produce one album that's better than most of what other musicians produce in their entire lifetime, your legacy is assured.
Ok, so maybe legacy is an exaggeration. The Darkness are a musical footnote, a sort of early 2000s version of The Knack. In fact, calling them a one-hit-wonder wouldn't be inaccurate. Yet here I am, posting the third of their songs to ever feature as my song of the week. And that's because their first album is perfect.
Just as man does not survive on bread alone, a music fan cannot survive on glam rock alone. So I go periods of years without listening to The Darkness, but when I do, I binge, listening to Permission to Land on repeat for about a week. It's more of a fling than a steady relationship but shit, what a week.
