When I started learning to play the bass, I found that there was a bit of a split in terms of playing songs I knew. A lot of songs have very simple baselines that are easy but fairly boring to play. So you get drawn to stuff with heavier bass, funk, say, but that's often too complicated for a beginner.
In the middle is a strata of songs that hit the sweet spot. Still not altogether difficult to play, but involving enough complexity that they're fun to play several times. Most of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californication falls under this category, as does Loverboy's "Turn me loose". I wouldn't normally go in for Loverboy ("Working for the weekend" notwithstanding"), but "Turn me loose" is perfectly representative of a particular kind of song that you seek out as a someone learning an instrument.
